NEW POLL: Kennedy and McClintock Tied in CA-04

Roseville: A new poll by Lake Research Partners in California’s 4th congressional district shows businesswoman Brynne Kennedy locked in a tight race with incumbent Rep. Tom McClintock.

The survey of 650 likely November voters shows the contest at a statistical tie, with the incumbent at 45% and Kennedy at 42% on an initial trial heat using only the candidate’s names, ballot designations and party affiliations. In subsequent tests based on voter handbook descriptions mailed to the electorate, McClintock’s margin shrinks to 47%-46%. After negative messaging on both Kennedy and McClintock, Kennedy leads 45%-43%. All results were within the poll’s margin of error.

“These results confirm McClintock’s blind partisan antics, votes against COVID relief, refusal to wear a mask or embrace common sense public health measures that would expedite re-opening businesses and schools, and his relentless efforts to take away people’s healthcare, Medicare and Social Security are increasingly out of touch with this fast growing, largely suburban district,” said Kennedy campaign spokesman Todd Stenhouse. “Businesswoman Brynne Kennedy is offering a pragmatic vision focused on recovery and community — not Republican or Democratic solutions but finding the right solutions to get us back on track.”

In March, McClintock had his weakest primary performance since narrowly winning the seat in 2008, with Kennedy earning the highest vote total and highest vote share of any Democratic challenger in California. Kennedy has outraised McClintock in each of the last two fundraising quarters, including outraising him by a more than two to one margin in the period ending June 30th, without accepting any corporate PAC contributions.

While a competitive 2018 election and prior 2020 surveys analyzed by Lake Research had suggested a close race, the latest polling results show a clear trend in Kennedy’s favor.

Last week, Kennedy released her first ads of the general election campaign and the CA 04 race was the only Congressional campaign in California, and one of just two in the entire western United States to be upgraded in favor of the challenger by the highly respected Cook Political Report.
